چکیده

A cladistic analysis of 19 characters was used to investigate the phylogeny of the Schzjornis group, a monophyletic assemblage of six genera of suboscine passerines which are currently placed in three different tyrannoid families: Schzfirnis (Pipridae, manakins), Laniisoma, Zodopleura (Cotingidae, cotingas), Laniocera, Xenopsaris, and Pachyramphus (Tyrannidae, tyrant flycatchers). The character systems analyzed include syringeal and cranial morphology, plumage, and nest architecture. Monophyly of the Schijornis group was supported by two syringeal synapomorphies. Within the group, the phylogenetic relationships of five of the six genera were resolved; Schzfirnis is the sister group to Laniisoma and Laniocera, and Xenopsaris is the sister group of Pachyramphus. The relationship of Zodopleura to these two corroborated clades was not resolved. The higher-level relationships of the Schzjornis group to other tyrannoids was not resolved. Results of two previous biochemical phylogenies of tyrannoids both corroborate and conflict with this morphological hypothesis. Comparative analysis of the evolution of breeding systems in tyrannoids indicates that polygyny may have developed independently within the group, resulting in the evolution of a novel form a male advertisement behavior without conspicuous sexual dimorphism and a distinct type of spatial dispersion of male territories.

A molecular phylogeny of the cotingas (Aves: Cotingidae).

The phylogenetic relationships of members of Cotingidae were investigated using >2100 bp of sequence data from two nuclear introns (myoglobin intron 2 and G3PDH intron 11) and one protein-coding mitochondrial gene (cytochrome b). Strong support was found for a monophyletic clade including 23 traditional cotingid genera, corresponding to the Cotingidae sensu [Remsen, J.V. Jr., Jaramillo, A., Nor...

A Preliminary Phylogenetic Hypothesis for the Cotingas (Cotingidae) Based on Mitochondrial DNA

The cotingas (Cotingidae) are a diverse family of Neotropical suboscines that are thought to be closely related to manakins (Pipridae) and tyrant flycatchers (Tyrannidae) in the superfamily Tyrannoidea (Lanyon 1985; McKitrick 1985; Sibley and Ahlquist 1985, 1990; Prum 1990). The cotingas include species with a great variety of plumages, breeding systems, and ecologies, and they exhibit the larg...

Molecular Phylogeny ofthe Puntius (Hamilton, 1822) Based on Nuclear Gene RAG2

The tropical Asian cyprinid genus Puntius is a major part of the ichthyofauna in Southeast Asia. Systematic status of the genus Puntius among Cyprinidae, the most prominent freshwater fish all over the world, remain to be substantiated. The molecular phylogenetic analyses derived from Recombination activating genesequences (RAG2) for 35 representative samples of Malaysian Puntius and their alli...

Subgeneric classification of Linaria (Plantaginaceae; Antirrhineae): molecular phylogeny and morphology revisited

Linaria Mill. (Plantaginaceae) with about 160 spp. is the largest genus of the tribe Antirrhineae. We conducted phylogenetic analyses of nuclear ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer region (ITS) and chloroplast DNA (rpl32-trnL) sequence data to test the monophyly of currently recognized sections in Linaria. For this purpose 86 species representing seven sections of Linaria and one species ...

Molecular systematics of New World suboscine birds.

Phylogenetic relationships among New World suboscine birds were studied using nuclear and mitochondrial DNA sequences. New World suboscines were shown to constitute two distinct lineages, one apparently consisting of the single species Sapayoa aenigma, the other made up of the remaining 1000+ species of New World suboscines. With the exception of Sapayoa, monophyly of New World suboscines was s...
